Random ramblings

Alright, down to business. Gotta start by saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jo's mum Dawn! Hope you had a great day today!!

Its been one of those weeks. For some reason there's been this underlying sense of anxiety sitting in my stomach for days. I hate when this happens, because I'm not settled and i sleep badly and everything just feels kind of blah. I mean i know I'm a natural worrier. If i have nothing to worry about, don't worry - I'll find something. Its not one of my prettier traits, and i pity the fools around me who have to pat me kindly on the hand and say "there there" while rolling their eyes in the other direction (Its OK, I'd do the same thing.)

Still, we did get up to a few bits and pieces - like going to see Inception at Imax with some friends. It was an impressive movie - great acting, great special effects, a storyline that leaves you debating long after the credits roll - but was it worth the hype? Cause there was a lot of hype. I mean people have been calling it the next Matrix. I would say...tentatively...yes, it just about lived up to the hype. Somethings holding me back from being as enthusiastic as Jo is about it - he loved it. I can't put my finger on what though. But it's solid, insightful storytelling, even if Ellen Page really annoyed me the whole time. She's looks too young i think, and i didn't buy her in the role.

What else. I've just finished reading, finally, the biggest thing to come out of Sweden since Ikea - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. EVERYONE is reading and loving this trilogy, and has been for the last year. So I'm late on the bandwagon. Some scattered points from me - firstly, the writing is crap. Or maybe its the translation that's crap, but whatever. Its very functional. By that i mean, its just a tool to tell a story. It's obvious that writing isn't a craft to the author, though storytelling maybe is - the story itself is very addictive. I was totally sucked in, and finished the book in 5 days. It's an oxymoron - i didn't enjoy the writing, but i couldn't put it down. I liken this to the Dan Brown craze - he has great stories, but his writing sucks. There's no pleasure in the reading of it at all, even though the story is very entertaining. Know what i mean? Secondly, this dude Larsson (unfortunately he passed away before the books were published) had a seriously sick imagination. It's almost TOO over the top. Rape, murder, incest, torture, sex, Nazis, affairs, secrets...this book has it all, the very worst of society is on display. Which i think was the authors point when writing it, but still. It was weird. Then again, part of what makes you race through it is the fact that it's so sordid. Thirdly, for all this social commentary on how women are treated like crap by their male counterparts, his main male character really is a classic womaniser. Classic because he typically thinks there's nothing at all wrong with his behaviour. Worse, most of the females he sleeps with ALSO don't think there's anything at all wrong with his behaviour. In fact, they all seem to be falling over themselves to have sex with him. Just sex, mind you. Nobody in this book seems to want to have a relationship with anyone else. Just sex. But at the end of it all, everyone certainly hopes they can "still be friends" They're all "very fond of each other." I mean, really? Is this just a Swedish thing? *shrugs*, maybe it is. Still, like i said, i couldn't stop reading, and it's a good whodunnit. There are plenty of twists and turns and my friends and I have been talking about it all week. I'm into the second one now, which is similar in style. That was a really long rant about one book. Sorry non-readers. Moving right along.

There really is nothing like a good meat pie and mash. See below if you don't believe me. I had one of these baby's yesterday, and God it was good. No nutritional value whatsoever, obviously. But it's winter. No one cares what they eat in winter, as long as its making you feel good.

We went yesterday to see our wedding reception venue actually set up for an actual wedding, so we'd get an idea of how it would look with all the tables in there, and a dance floor etc. I'm glad we went, because i was panicking slightly about whether it would look empty-ish - the venue itself is a heritage-listed converted wharf warehouse, and even though the dark wood and beams are lovely, i thought it had the potential to look bare. I think it was the high ceilings that had me worried. But once it's filled with tables and chairs and all that, it didn't look at all empty like i pictured, which was good. We're also trying to finalise the guest list, an exercise i can best describe as painful and frustrating. Don't try it at home kids.

We headed over to Daniel and Romina's afterwards to see the baby, since naturally we don't care about them much at all any more. How could we, when their very entertaining munchkin steals the limelight these days. 2 points about Luca - one, he has a high-pitched shriek that rivals Mariah Carey, and two, his name should actually be Puker, because he spent most of the afternoon spewing. Not that i held it against him. Better out than in and all that.

Luca looking over at his mother pleadingly - "Ma, for reals, get me off her. She's crazy man. Crazy."

On a final note, hands up if you know what a flogging is?
To flog: Definition - to beat harshly. As in, Australia was flogged by New Zealand in last nights game. Bah. BAH. I blame the ref. Yellow cards, red cards, penalties every two minutes...it was ridiculous. But it didn't stop Adrian from bringing out the yellow jumpsuit in support of the Aussies (you got one free with every jug of bundy rum and coke last night. I mean that's value.) And what a fashion statement it was. I'm sorry i don't have one in my wardrobe for just these occasions.

Jo, Adrian and Fe's hand. I particularly love the pulled up socks with this look. Its special.

Back to the Future is on, so i gotta go. Any movie with a flux capacitor gets a thumbs up from me.

Ha, Winter! The sun defies you!

The last few days have been GLORIOUS. We had a cold snap, but SUCK IT WINTER - the sun's back and better then ever. At the beach today we actually saw people sunbathing - sunbathing! I mean i was rugged up, but it was WARM.

At first i was skeptical about the whole excursion. Jo's alarm went off inexcusably early for a Saturday, which at first i thought was a horrible mistake, but no. He said that I'd better get myself up and ready, cause we were going out. Obviously i was taken aback. Out? Us? In the...morning? Before...lunchtime? How can this be? Not one to argue, (what? i'm not. why are you laughing?) i leaped out of bed without one complaint (creative liberties. it's my blog and I'll lie if i want to) and we headed out for brunch, here, at one of my most favourite places in all of Sydney - the bathers pavilion in Balmoral.

In my humble (read, expert) opinion, this is one of the prettiest spots (and nicest beaches) in town - how, tell me, could you possibly disagree?

Balmoral Beach

Me, THRILLED to be by the water as always

This place was built in the 1920s, and was, literally, a pavilion for bathers for about 40 years. Change rooms, lockers, shops that sold towels and caps and so on. Now it's a restaurant/cafe with a killer view and a damn fine bacon and corn hash, if you're into that sort of thing. We usually have dinner in the restaurant, but the cafe is great for brunch - much more casual. We got a great seat by the window, where the gleam off the water was so bright that i had to don my sunnies, indoors, in winter, because i have to remind you again that this IS winter, despite the 19 degree temperatures *swoon*...

After brunch and a walk, we were off to our next destination, another of my favourite places in Sydney town, the Orpheum in Cremorne. I've talked about this old cinema before, a gem with its original features restored to their former glory. Its always a treat to see a movie there.

We were there to see Toy Story 3 (yes, in 3D), which we've been meaning to see since it came out but as usual, no time. Even as adults, we admit to loving these movies, cause who doesn't, and the third installment was a fitting goodbye to all our favourite toys. There were some new additions, notably barbie and a suitably cheesy and fashion-smitten Ken, and I'll tell ya right now that i spent the last ten minutes of the movie bawling like a baby. Even if you haven't see the first two, I'm pretty sure you'll still enjoy the this one - wrangle up some kids and check it out. Or not - hell, we were the only childless (and totally fine with that) couple in the cinema. It's funny, heartwarming, bittersweet - i guess its kind of about growing up and saying goodbye.

Jo and I with our groovy as 3D glasses. I kept mine, cause you never know when you'll need a pair.

Tomorrow, we're off to the powerhouse museum to see the 80s exhibition they've got going there at the moment. Can you believe that?? An 80s EXHIBITION!!! FREAKEN AWESOME!!! Pictures will surely follow.
And now I'm going to the pub, so sayonara from me kiddies. Enjoy your Saturday night!

On the move

We've known for a little while that we would need to move in the next month or so, so we've been busily looking for a new apartment and this week - we found one! Even more exciting - it's right across the road from where we live now! Which makes it easy to move, and means we can say in an area we like. So that's that problem solved. Hopefully we'll be settled in by next weekend, so I'll be MIA until the Internet connection is back up and running.

In other news, we saw Iron Man 2 on Tuesday. It was OK. I mean i enjoyed it, it was just totally too over the top for me. There were times when i was actually rolling my eyes. I know it's a super hero movie and all, but I've seen plenty of those - in fact I've seen plenty of fantasy/sci-fi movies in general - and it's a rare thing for me to think yeah, this really is a stretch, even for my imagination. It just felt like everything came to him too easily. Discovering a new element? No problem. Give me ten. Fighting off the ultimate bad dude (after kicking the butts of an army of droids just moments before)? Easy peasy. He was polished off in under two minutes. These are two of about 50 highly improbable plot lines, which wouldn't bother me if there was at least some attempt to convince me that any of it was plausible.

The rest of our group really enjoyed it though, so maybe its just me. There were lots of things to like about the film - Robert Downey Jr was fabulous as always, and the supporting cast was good. Even Scarlett Johansson, whom i normally find very bland. The best thing about Iron Man for me is the dialogue, and i got plenty of laughs, same as the first one. And i do like the little Iron Man/Pepper love story thingy, they seem to have good chemistry. I just couldn't quite get behind the storyline, right from the start.

On Thursday we went to see a video company called Soda Films, which we'll potentially use for our wedding. They seem more reasonably priced than some of the others we've seen (maybe because they are one of the most popular), and you get a lot from the package. Plus, they seemed like very nice people, and you are allowed to be very involved in the end result, which i like. They are the top contender so far. In other wedding news, I'm really into lanterns right now. I'm having a vision of the reception room being filled with them. We'll see.

Our weekend was filled with rugby games (go Waratah's!!!), running around picking up keys for our new place, a very rowdy housewarming, and moving. And reading. I'm reading an excellent book called The Secret History, by Donna Tartt (i know, unfortunate last name). I can't believe i haven't read this before now actually, since it's been out for years. It's about a group of college friends who get mixed up in a way of thinking and living that begins to break the boundaries of morality. Great writing and a tense plot line - enjoying it so far.

Coming up this week - moving, moving and more moving. And Robin Hood on Tuesday night, cause i love epic movies, and Cate Blanchett's in this one. Hello, what more could you want.
