A Streetcar Named Desire

I couldn't think of a more witty blog post tonight, sorry folks. I'll take suggestions though. Give away a mars bar to the best one? Anyone? Are you out there?

OK, so not much to report this week, except that Jo has been away in New Zealand visiting the fam, which means i have had 5 days of watching whatever i want whenever i want on foxtel and it has been GREAT. I mean. Of course it's great when he's here. I'm just saying. It's also been great while he's... not. But for the most part it's WAY greater when he's here. Except for the foxtel thing. Cause honestly? That's been...really great.

I'm talking unlimited access to SVU, Oprah, Jon and Kate Plus 8, Friends, Project Runway, Sex and the City, the Gilmore Girls....and new discoveries too, like 30 Rock, which is really very funny. No Megastructures or Megamachines or Megabuildings!

Not that I'm some sort of television addict. I mean yes, i like watching mindless trash TV. So what? Is that a crime now? And how much TV is too much TV anyway? 5 hours? 6? Says who? I work hard! If i want to watch a few hours of television when i get home than i will! Yes siree bob. No problem here...*stares blankly at screen as brain cells are rapidly vaporised*

Besides, i did do one cultural thing this week - Leah and I went to see Cate Blanchett in the Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Names Desire. Let me just say this:

Cate. Is. Freaken. Amazing.

Seriously. She was fabulous. She was the perfect Blanche DuBois, first of all - sort of reminded me of Vivien Leigh's version in the old movie, except better. She's just so natural, i really can't stop blubbering on about her to anyone who'll listen. When we tried to describe her performance to Chris afterwards, we found ourselves reverently blubbering words like "luminous" and "resplendent" and "gifted", which yes, OK, was probably taking it all a bit too far, but hello. It's Cate Blanchett. We were a tiny bit in awe.

Joel Edgerton was fantastic too, as Stanley (though when it came to his famous line "STELLA!", i think we secretly wanted him to deliver it in a more Elaine-like way than he actually did. She's ruined it for all Stanley's i say.)

I mean it's a great play anyway, but it becomes pretty brilliant when you have two wonderful performers as leads - makes it that much better to watch.

In other news, i learnt a new word today - auspices. I'll let DT tell y'all what it means though, since he's the one who spent half an hour today looking for a definition that made any sense. What a weirdo. *ducks*

  1. Dearest Readers,

Duty has once again called me to action to correct the record posted on the 10/09/2009.

As requested by our blogger the word auspices means "under the care of or the responsibilty of". Generally it it used in this context. Schools are under the auspices of the Dept of Education etc or something along those lines. But I am sure you all knew that.

Like you, I knew what it meant and tried to expalin the meaning to Ornella. But being skeptical and stubbon as she is. She would not accept my word and insisted I find a definition for it on the internet.

So I briefly checked the online dictionary, though I will admit I had the spelling slightly wrong so it did take a couple of minutes. (Not the half hour the blogger describes). All along having Ornella heap a torrent of doubt and abuse on me. The defination was quiclky located.

Upon seeing her error Ornella stormed off muttering things not appropriate for reproduction here.

What I find weird, no I shouold say distrubing is that someone who writes correspondence and communication pieces as a profession has such a shallow depth of vocabulary.

This is a troubling revelation, most troubling indeed. And for the colleagues of Ornella and I out there, fear not, dear workmates, this knowlegde gap will be raised at the highest levels of management as a matter of urgency.

And i am sure they will ask for training to be undertaken by our blogger. And I am sure not on comapny time so the productity of those like you and I striving to give our best for our organisation will not be affected adversly.

It is also a sad indictment of the attention Ornella paid in school and tertiary education. Too busy socialising to concetrate on her studies I imagine. Much like in the workplace.

Its dissapionting to have to make these corrections to this blog on such a regular basis but as I have mentioned previously I feel it my duty to set the record straight on occasion.

Eternal vigelence is our only defence to these unfounded slurs.

    Sincerly

  2. A few points:

    1. You readlly do have too much time on your hands Turnsie. I suggest you find a hobby.

    2. The word auspices is not commonly under the definition outlined by you above. In fact, the most common definition across all dictionaries consulted was 'An African gazelle'.

    3. Although i thoroughly enjoyed your suggestion that i was unable to to my job properly, i'll remind you that my role is to make things as simple and easy to understand for our customers as possible; never in my right mind would i use a word like auspices in a communication. Furthermore, that communication you requested from me on Friday last has sadly fallen to number 103 on my list of things to do.

In summary Turns, and to use laymans terms - you're a douchebag.

    And coffee's on you tomorrow.
